The story follows Maria, a woman studying for the Roman Catholic sisterhood who becomes a governess to the seven children of Captain Georg Ritter von Trapp.
Captain von Trapp is a widower and World War I captain who raises his children in a strict and militaristic manner until Maria brings warmth and joy back into their household.
"I love the story because it's a classic underdog tale. Maria has come from an abbey and then marries into a well-off family. She changes their life with music and love and it's based on a true story," Ali Burgess said, who plays Elsa the Baroness.
Ali, who has grown up with theatre in her life, loves her role as the Baroness.
"I love that I get to be mean, it's a change from how I am in real life, something different," Ali said.
Tom Marr, who plays Captain von Trapp, said the musical has a family vibe and displays strong family values.
"I think it's a good show to do at a time like this. Our culture seems to be focusing on family values a lot more," he said.
"It's such a classic. Everyone knows it."
Tom is happy with his role as Captain von Trapp as he gets to play a father figure.
"And I get three public pashes," he said.
The musical, directed by Mr John Ash, will be performed today and tomorrow with today's matinee show for local school students and the evening show and two Saturday shows open to the public.
Amelia Rawson and Ruby Greer will share the role of Gretl von Trapp over the five performances, with one being held last night for Kinross boarders.
